Located in the northernmost region of Sumatra, Buana Mandiri is a family-owned cooperative that works with farmers whose family's have worked with coffee for generations. It spans along the mountains of Lake Tawar and the central city of Takengon. The exporter that Buana Mandiri works with is called Gayo Mandiri, which is also family owned. They work with several owned family cooperatives, operate a central dry mill, and create relationships with buyers, like Royal. Coffee farms in this region are relatively small, at around 0.5-2 hectares each. Because of this, each part of the coffee process moves to different parties before it is ready to be exported. At each farm belonging to a cooperative member, a collector stops by once a day to pick up freshly picked cherry and bring them to the central mill. Gayo Mandiri supports their farmers both financially and with the supply of farming tools, as well as investing in drying tents in their central mills to prevent the spoilage of their coffee.
